About South Africa

Before we dive into the travel guide from Nigeria to South Africa, I will like us to make a summary of this well-developed place. This country is officially known as the Republic of  South Africa (RSA), which is located at the Southern-most part of the African Continent. RSA is bounded in the south of the country by the South Atlantic Ocean and the Indian ocean. While on the north, South Africa is bounded by Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe and to the Northeast, it is bounded by Mozambique and Swaziland.

In terms of tourism, South Africa has one of the most exciting places in Africa. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the tourism industry directly contributed ZAR 102 billion to South African GDP in 2012 and supports 10.3% of jobs in the country. South Africa offers both domestic and international tourists a wide variety of options, among others the picturesque natural landscape and game reserves, diverse cultural heritage, and highly regarded wines. Some of the most popular destinations include several national parks, such as the expansive Kruger National Park in the north of the country, the coastlines and beaches of the KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape provinces, and the major cities like Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

Below are the necessary steps and guide to obtaining a south African Visa and how to travel from Nigeria

South African Visa Types

1. Visitors Visa

This is for the applicants who have the intention to visit Family or for vacation & holiday purposes. This type of visa has 90 days validity.

2. Long Stay Visitor Visa

Long  stay visitor Visa is exactly as the name is. It is best for those who wish to stay in South Africa between 3 Months to 3 years.

3. Business Visa

Business Visa is the type available for those who wish to travel to South Africa for work and Visa purposes. The duration of this visa is determined by the motivation of the applicant. However, it has been known that the Embassy gives a duration between 3 years to 5 years. Documents required for a business visa can be viewed on the VFS website.

South Africa Visa Processing Time

Visa processing just takes a Minimum of 6 working days. This is largely accompanied by a thorough assessment of the Applicant by the VFS.

Collection of the RSA Visa

Application centre for the Visa is opened from Monday to Friday between 11 am to 3 pm except for days there is a holiday in Nigeria or the country the VFS is located.

While coming to collect the Visa, bring your receipt which you received on the day of submission of application. Note that after you applied and submitted, you will get an SMS notification when the application form has been sent to the South African Embassy.

Passport Courier Service Fee: ₦4,500 per passport.

The South African visa fee is subject to change without notice. It is based on the current exchange rate.

Applicants are to pay in cash at Bank Implant inside VFS Centre. Be sure to have a copy of the first page of your passport when paying the service and visa fee at the bank.

Nigeria to South Africa Visa Requirements

Below is the Visa requirements for both  visitor visa and Long stay Visitor Visa:

  1. A valid passport (validity of at least 30 days after the intended stay).
  2. Two identical passport size (45mmx45mm) photographs on white background showing your complete face.
  3. Application Form (BI84), fully completed in black ink only.
  4. Copy of passport data page as well as copies of existing visa and previously issued visas.
  5. Self-introduction letter with a physical address and phone number.
  6. Introduction/Recommendation letter from an employer, where applicable, signed with contact details.
  7. Verifiable hotel reservation/bookings: must be done directly with the hotels and not through third parties.
  8. Copy of an international vaccination card (yellow fever card), fully completed by a health practitioner. Check out our post on How to Obtain Yellow Fever card in Nigeria
  9. Proof of financial status: This is a 6 months bank statement from you, employer or sponsor
  10. Applicants traveling on official business should attach a letter of invitation/confirmation of training/conference, etc. from the relevant South African company with full details of the company’s authorized representative, physical address, and phone numbers (landline number compulsory) must be included.
  11. Birth certificate for minors/children traveling with parents: Where applicable, a consent letter with copies of parents’ identification card/passport data page, which should be attached to the application.
  12. Marriage certificate: where applicable and if the intended stay will be for more than 90 days
  13. Booking Verifiable Flight:  Applicants should provide flight bookings sometimes a return ticket is needed for the short stay.
  14. Non-refundable visa fee: The Visa fee is ₦8,600, this is excluding service fee.

Where to apply

You can apply for your South African visa at VFS Global in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt. All applicants must submit their applications in person at the application centres.

Lagos VFS Application Centre

Lagos accepts 230 applications per day. So go as early as 7am.

Abuja accepts 150 applications per day. So go very early also

Port Harcourt accepts only 20 applications per day to avoid long queues. So go as early as 7am.
